While most teenage boys are sitting at home playing on the Xbox or PlayStation 4, Sam Mostowfi and his elite band of friends are at the gym learning about discipline and camaraderie. He’s only 13 years old, but already Sam is representing his country at an international level and doing us proud.
Like a growing number of families, Sam’s family moved to Maidstone three years ago so that Sam could attend the prestigious Pegasus Gymnastics Club in Tovil. Even more significantly, Sam’s coach decided to make the move too, and he is now part of the coaching team at Pegasus. But their gamble of moving to Maidstone (and all of Sam’s and his coaches’ hard work) seems to be paying off. “After a year of joining Pegasus, I joined the big squad which I never would have thought was possible. And normally to take part in an international competition you have to be 15, but I’ve been selected at 13, so I’m one of the youngest participants ever.”
Sam looks back fondly to the first gym he attended in Brighton, and remembers the coaches being fantastic, but the gym sadly lacked the equipment needed for him to really progress. He boasts about the state of the art facilities at the newly-refurbished Pegasus which include a recreation gym, squad gym, free running area, cross fit and dance studios, conference centre and café. “Where we lived in Brighton we used to walk past an old church building every day. I asked my mum what it was and she told me it was a gym. I wanted to join but I was too young and had to wait. I joined as soon as I was old enough and rose up through the ranks to join the boys squad. Now I’m at Pegasus in the GB squad.”

One of Restoring Heath’s good friends Christopher Williams is about to undertake one of the hardest mountain races in the World – The Dragon’s Back Race™The legendary Dragon’s Back Race™ follows the mountainous spine of Wales from Conwy Castle to Carreg Cennen Castle in Wales. This incredible 5-day journey is approximately 300 kilometres long with 16,000 metres of ascent across wild, trackless, remote and mountainous terrain. It is not a trail race.
It takes place from the 22nd-26th June 2015.
We managed to catch up with him before he left for a quick chat:
Why are you so eager to go do this race?
I have always enjoyed the great outdoors and have in recent years done quite well in military style test march races such as The Fan Dance. However looking for something new and a desire to step it up a gear, combined with hearing about The Dragon’s Back Race’s return, I was inspired to take on this new challenge. What are you most looking forward to? I am really looking forward to enjoying the journey down through the mountainous spine of Wales, as that is where I was brought up and lived for the first 27 years of my life. I look forward to taking in those remote parts that ‘tourists’ never see and getting away from it all for five days.
How has Restoring Health helped you to prepare for the journey ahead?
Looking forward to this challenge I am very aware of how others have played a very important role in getting me to the start line, let alone the finishing one!
Deborah and her very capable team have really helped me to overcome niggles that could have become road blocks and without a doubt have been integral in giving me the results needed to qualify and on top of that gain the confidence to get to the place where I am today.
Mountains ahoy! Thank you Restoring Health!
If you are interested in following Chris’ Journey minute by minute over the five days – all the competitors are fitted with Live Trackers which will allow you to follow their progress on The Dragon’s Back website HERE.
Simply click on his name and his current position will be displayed.
We will be watching Chris with bated breath, wishing him all the best on this incredibly exciting journey! We can’t wait to hear all the stories when he returns.
